I was chatting with a woman on the street the other day about coming in for acupuncture. I asked if she had ever received acupuncture and she hadn’t. So I launched into a quick explanation of community acupuncture and why it is wonderful being treated in a group. She stopped me mid sentence. “Oh! That would never work for me because I snore! I would disturb everyone in the room!” At that point, we were distracted by a third person and the conversation was derailed. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to share with her our thoughts about snoring.
There is something about being treated in a group setting that often allows people to relax even more. Especially when someone is snoring! It may sound counter intuitive, but it happens. One of the ways that we experience the response to snoring in the treatment room is by observing people reaching deeper levels of relaxation. We don’t really know why this happens (Does anyone out there know why?) but we see it over and over again. Possibly other peoples’ snoring has the same affect as a rhythmical sound such as an ocean wave that may trigger deep relaxation. Or maybe it conjures up sweet memories of that favorite snoring someone from your life. Again, we’re not sure why. If you have any insight, please comment below!
Of course, not everyone always responds to snoring by relaxing. Some people get agitated. And, so, we offer free disposable ear plugs, we play soothing music, and also run a white noise machine to try to buffer all sounds – including snoring. We also invite you to bring your own head phones with music that you love to drown out the other sounds in the room that you may not love so much.
We love treating in a group setting! It is important to realize though that the group setting does sometimes call for flexibility and patience. All of the following could happen: someone could be sitting in your favorite recliner, someone could forget to turn their phone off, someone could speak loudly, snoring could happen, and a number of other noises or distractions are always a possibility. So, when the time comes that you are getting a treatment and one of the above happens, we invite you to take a deep breathe and settle back in with a smile of gratitude to be part of such an amazing community of perfectly imperfect people.
